| Check out books at the library, be ready for the perfect storm
Wind blowing, sirens wailing, taking cover in the bathtub, lights flicker and go offdarkness, sounds of things hitting other things, then us finally going outside. Very large tree limb blocking breezeway, inches from window, gaping holes on sides of buildings, numerous chimney-like structures either broken and lying on their side on the roofs or lying scattered about in between apartments. Pieces of debris of all types scattered about. We later found out that it was not a tornado but very strong winds, but those strong winds were scary enough in the moments that they did their damage. My husband and I walked around the area of our apartment complex and the neighboring complex with a couple other neighbors whom we had just met to look at the damage and also see if anyone needed any help. (There is a lot to be said about getting to know your neighbors because if something happens in your neighborhood then you can all work together to help make sure things are alright)The neighboring complex had been hit just as hard but they also had uprooted trees that blocked parking lot entrances and exits along with tree limbs breaking windows.
Nicola’s Veggies opened today
Marco & Luca co-owner Dragana Katalina-Sun (far left), who runs the popular noodle and dumpling shop in York Place with her Chinese-born husband, Sun Da, opened Nicola's Veggies today, along with a little help from Kimberly Ramberg, in the the little space on Second Street where the couple first began selling their dumplings. However, what she's offering couldn't be farther away from dumplings and spicy noodles. Although just as tasty and quick to order, Katalina-Sun's new offerings just might make you as healthy as an ox and about ten pounds lighter. That's because her menu is based on nutritional consultant Donna Gates' book The Body Ecology Diet, now in its 9th edition, which advocates adding cultured foods to your diet, changing the quality of fats and oils you eat, and cutting down on carbohydrates and sugars.

Kids' book takes on plastic surgery
Divorce. Bullies. Foster care. There are books for children on just about every tough subject these days. But mommy's plastic surgery? A Florida plastic surgeon has written about just that in "My Beautiful Mommy," a picture book due out April 28 that tries to calm the fears of kids with parents getting tummy tucks, breast enhancement procedures and nose jobs. Dr. Michael Salzhauer said so many moms brought kids to their appointments that he was motivated to stock up on lollipops in his Bal Harbour, Fla., office. In "My Beautiful Mommy," he explains mommy's recuperation, changing look and desire for plastic surgery. "Many parents don't explain to their kids what's going on," said the father of four, with his fifth child on the way. "Children are very perceptive.
