Persevering With Parkinson’s

Waiting means youre not necessarily living. Embrace what we can do for ourselves and in a small way, we find our own cure. Davis Finney, a former professional and Olympic road bicyclist, was diagnosed with Parkinsons at age 40.

For Joe Ralph, assistant director of Nursing at Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing in Gerry, life as he knew it, changed forever on Oct. 22, 2004. This is when he was officially diagnosed with Parkinsons at the young age of 38.

Most people think Parkinsons only affects the senior population, but nearly 15 percent of all documented Parkinsons cases are individuals under the age of 50. And although hard to imagine, there are also specific cases of teenagers diagnosed with the disease. The disease shows no discretion and can affect people of all ages and social backgrounds.

Beauty and style tips

Summer brings with it heat rash and prickly heat, and unless you take care of your skin, you could end up with an itchy and sore back.

Put a few neem leaves in your bath water and ensure that your back is dried properly before you put on your clothes. Sprinkle a prickly heat powder on your body liberally, and stick to cotton clothes. Make sure to change your clothes at least twice a day.

Flaunt your tube dresses
The ensembles to flaunt right now are tube dresses and tunics. They will make you stand out when worn by themselves, or when teamed with pants or mini skirts.

They also give you plenty of opportunity to experiment with accessories. Bring out all those chunky neckpieces as they look great with both tube dresses and tunics.

Spa treatment: Mean feat of 'the cure'

Casilda Grigg reluctantly cries off the KitKats to sample a strict star spa

Dr Max summons me to his consulting room for a pep talk. This is my first day of a punishing week-long detox "cure" at Henri Chenot in the Dolomites, a spa famous for its ability to slim waistlines, boost energy levels and restore morale to Italy's moneyed classes. It is one of the strictest spas in the world. Thanks to rationing, medical intervention, excruciating massages and vigorous water treatments, guests can expect to lose 2-5 kilos in a week.

It's eco-chic as fashion goes green

To disagree with Kermit the Frog, it is easy being green.

By now, if you're not sleeping on bamboo sheets, drying off after your shower with organic cotton towels, slipping into a soy sheath and flashing conflict-free diamonds, you're just not eco-chic.

The greening of the fashion industry, building for the past couple of years, is moving from class to mass. Indeed, what started with a handful of designers on environmental missions selling their wares at indie boutiques has become a full-fledged fashion phenomenon, with major players like JC Penney joining in.

Concern about climate changes, energy costs and product safety are among the factors driving consumers to want clothes and other products that are made from environmentally sustainable materials like bamboo. More than one- third of American adults say they "regularly" buy green products, up from just 12 percent last year, according to Mintel, a market research company.

Home alone: Pets abandoned as owners can't afford them

Complaints about abandoned animals are soaring amid Metro Detroit's listless economy and foreclosure crisis. Sometimes, the pets are given to a shelter. Sometimes, they're just let out the door and face sickness and starvation.

Often, they breed, creating another generation of problems.

Complaints to the Michigan Humane Society about abandoned animals have nearly tripled since 2003 to 1,381 last year. They come as foreclosures have jumped 68 percent statewide in one year to 136,205 filings in 2007, according to RealtyTrac Inc., an Irvine, Calif.-based group.

Last year, Michigan ranked third nationwide in foreclosures behind only Nevada and Florida. Filings fell 7 percent in January from a year ago. Now, Michigan ranks 10th -- an improvement.Still, the phone rings constantly at the Animal Care Network, said Marie Skladd, president.

Kids' book takes on plastic surgery

Divorce. Bullies. Foster care. There are books for children on just about every tough subject these days. But mommy's plastic surgery?

A Florida plastic surgeon has written about just that in "My Beautiful Mommy," a picture book due out April 28 that tries to calm the fears of kids with parents getting tummy tucks, breast enhancement procedures and nose jobs.

Dr. Michael Salzhauer said so many moms brought kids to their appointments that he was motivated to stock up on lollipops in his Bal Harbour, Fla., office. In "My Beautiful Mommy," he explains mommy's recuperation, changing look and desire for plastic surgery.

"Many parents don't explain to their kids what's going on," said the father of four, with his fifth child on the way. "Children are very perceptive.

VIDEOS and PICTURES: How to beat bluetongue this summer FWi

The onset of spring and the imminent promise of vaccination have drawn bluetongue into focus again, Jonathan Long reviews the UK disease situation.

Warmer days may be just the boon flagging grassland needs this spring, but they are also the one thing that will encourage the spread of bluetongue disease across the UK as midge activity and virus replication step up a gear.

Bluetongue is the quiet killer, arriving unannounced on the wind with the midges and striking quickly to affect ruminants of all shapes and sizes. Sheep, cattle, goats, llamas and deer are all at risk, although sheep are most affected by the disease and most likely to die as a consequence.

When vaccinating cattle a large fold of skin should be taken hold off and the vaccination given under this skin.
