Local women create natural cosmetics

Julia Brownfield and Victoria England have something in common: At some point, each of them looked at commercially available cosmetics and skin care products and thought, "I can make better stuff than this."

So they set out to do it. Through determination and a great deal of trial-and-error experimentation, each developed her own line of products, created packaging and labeling, tackled the difficult task of marketing, and now each operates her own business, offering organic alternatives to traditional cosmetics.

Brownfield's initial motivation was a selfish one.

"I trained racehorses for 15 years, so my skin took a beating," she said. "I wanted a natural product for my skin. It was just for me."

Making extensive use of the Internet, Brownfield began researching fruits and vegetables, oils and vitamins, looking for the ideal ingredients to improve the health of her skin.

Adult Acne Gel by ZAPZYT became available April 1.

Waltman Pharmaceuticals, based in Flowood, has been marketing the ZAPZYT line of skin care products since 1987.

Dania residents: Toxic construction dust made us sick

Lueron Dixon, a retired nurse, suffers repeated skin rashes and must take breathing treatments every night to clear her lungs.

The longtime resident blames her health problems on toxic dust she says blew into her home during construction of a nearby warehouse a few years ago.

"I had nosebleed," she said. "Right now I have a lot of mucus. I cough so much at night, I've almost choked on my own mucus." Worse, she said, her brother, Eddie Fairchild, who shared her home, "right now has colon cancer, he has liver cancer; he has lung cancer. His concern is to live."

Dixon is one of almost 100 neighbors in a predominantly black community suing Lauris Boulanger Inc., which developed the Dania Distribution Centre at Dania Beach Boulevard and Southwest 12th Avenue.

Kids' book takes on plastic surgery

Divorce. Bullies. Foster care. There are books for children on just about every tough subject these days. But mommy's plastic surgery?

A Florida plastic surgeon has written about just that in "My Beautiful Mommy," a picture book due out April 28 that tries to calm the fears of kids with parents getting tummy tucks, breast enhancement procedures and nose jobs.

Dr. Michael Salzhauer said so many moms brought kids to their appointments that he was motivated to stock up on lollipops in his Bal Harbour, Fla., office. In "My Beautiful Mommy," he explains mommy's recuperation, changing look and desire for plastic surgery.

"Many parents don't explain to their kids what's going on," said the father of four, with his fifth child on the way. "Children are very perceptive.

Medical News: Moles, Allergy Relievers, Men's Health

If you plan to tan this summer, or even if tanning is a thing from the past, two studies released Monday will help people evaluate their risk of developing melanoma.

A study published in JAMA Archives confirmed that skin lesions which measure 6mm or more are twice as likely to be cancerous as lesions less than 6 mm, or about one-fourth of an inch in diameter.

NYU researchers base their findings on a study of more than 1,300 patients. .
