| Care workers in neglect case
AN ELDERLY woman was neglected by care workers and died only five weeks after moving to a new nursing home, a court heard yesterday. Gladys Thomas, 84, had extensive bruising to her chest, lower back, arms and groin, and a broken rib and collar bone when she was admitted to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, in October 2005, the city's Crown Court was told. Jurors heard that staff at Bryngwyn Nursing Home, Newbridge, Caerphilly, may have tied the schizophrenic pensioner to a chair or bed with a ligature like an electric flex in the hours before her final admission to hospital, eight days before her death. Prosecutor Gerard Elias QC said: "There's no innocent explanation for the fractured collar bone and extensive bruising to the right chest wall, the right arm, her groin or the possible ligature mark.
Start spring with beautiful legs and feet
Hamburg - Out of sight, out of mind: while our hands typically get washed and moisturized every day, care for our feet and legs tends to be an afterthought. This is especially true in the cold-weather months when thick socks and heavy shoes are the rule and keep the feet and legs well concealed. But once winter is over, the legs and feet look uncared for. Short skirts and open shoes expose the dry patches, bothersome cellulite and fungus skin. When these conditions occur, it's high time for a special beauty treatment to tackle the problem, and aesthetics is not the only reason to do. "Regular foot care also prevents many tough problems," said Mechthild Geismann of the German association of podiatrists and clinicians who offer foot care. Britta John of Germany's Beauty Alliance, an association of perfumeries, said foot care should occur on a weekly basis and it should include trimming the nails and cuticles, removal of calluses and an application of moisturizer.
Health food is going to the dogs - literally
Consumers have been displaying a hearty appetite for all things healthy, natural and vitamin-infused. Consumer companies are pushing that trend a step further, right into the heart of the canine world. Cott Corp., a maker of private-label sodas for human consumption, is one of the latest companies taking the health-and-wellness craze to the animal kingdom. Cott is rolling out a line of vitamin-infused beverages for dogs, not unlike the enhanced juices and drinks for humans lining grocery and convenience-store shelves. "This is our first foray into the pet industry," Cott spokeswoman Lucia Ross said. "The same way the trend is healthier food and beverages for people, we believe that healthy beverages for pets are the next step." Cott's move displays how companies are trying to grab a share of the U.S.

Piercing answers to your 'below-the-belt' questions
During my wild years in the Seattle punk scene, I did some pretty dumb stuff. By far though, getting my belly button pierced on stage at a particularly dingy punk club, no less was the glob of awesomely dumb icing on the top of my dumb teen-angst cake. But even though I left that special stage of my life with far fewer brain cells than I had going into it, I did learn something: Dont mess around with piercings. Q: I have had a few friends interested in getting genital piercings, but it just seems really risky. I have heard the piercing can increase sexual sensation and be really enjoyable. What are the risks and benefits involved, and is there anything else that they should know before taking the plunge? A: From years of getting holes poked in my skin I have learned the fundamental risks of all piercings.
