Ask Laura Mercier

Q: IM using Laura Merciers Secret Concealer for my dark eye bags but I am still unable to conceal them. The shadow of the bags can still be seen. Do I need to use foundation before or after applying the concealer? And what is the best lighting condition to put make-up on? Lily Chan.

A: Use a light layer of foundation on the eye area first, and then gently pat on the Secret Concealer on top of it working from the bottom of the concave eye area and gradually move upwards and outwards. Remember to set this area with Secret Brightening Powder. Natural day light is the best condition to apply make-up.

Q: I WEAR contact lens, what is the best way to wear eye make-up to avoid dryness and itchiness to my eyes? Katerine Lim, Petaling Jaya,

A: Use products formulated for sensitive eyes and avoid any products with glitter.

Marketplace: Pork industry to be topic at Kiwanis

Steve Weaver of Weaver Farms in Elk Grove will discuss changes in the U.S. pork industry today at a meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Rocklin. Weaver, one of 58,000 pork producers in the United States, will talk about the industry's impact on the economy, programs to enhance the nutritional quality of pork and steps to protect the environment.

"Like other industries facing strong competitive pressures, we're working to constantly improve our ability to provide tasty, affordable and nutritious pork products in a responsible manner," Weaver said.

A typical sow operation generates $27,000 in property taxes, $65,000 in state taxes, 21 jobs and 19 indirect local jobs, Weaver said. The meeting will begin at noon at Rocklin Lanes Bowling Center, 2325 Sierra Meadows Drive, Rocklin.

Earth Day hot air: The true crisis to come

YESTERDAY was Earth Day, with enough hot air emitted from politicians and bureaucrats to raise perhaps a truly valid concern about global warming. People in New Hampshire and around the country should indeed be concerned about the issue, because the push for drastic measures may soon result in a true crisis for us all.

Figuring out the scope of the global warming "problem" is itself a task that few politicians seem interested in pursuing. They would much rather pass legislation.

Last Friday's Wall Street Journal had a piece by a professor of environmental sciences at the University of Virginia that brought up this point, while poking significant holes in the hot-air hysteria.

Prof. Patrick Michaels noted that U.S. Sens. Joe Lieberman and John Warner have proposed a law to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by a whopping 66 percent by 2050.
