| Genesis Genomics goes to market with at-home skin test
Local biotechnology firm Genesis Genomics has launched a new product it hopes will change the face of the cosmoceutical marketplace. For the first time ever a take-home product will have the ability to detect DNA damage to a person's skin from UV exposure, to identify future risks and show the best way to treat any damage that may exist. And it is performed by a simple cotton swab. Genesis Genomics has put it's science behind a new line of skin care and repair products that will hit the shelves in nine markets around the world next month. Once risk factors are identified there is a line of treatments specially designed to either protect an individual or even repair damage already done at the most basic DNA level. Shopper's Drug Mart has signed on and will carry the product in 800 stores nationwide.
How What and How Much We Eat (And Drink) Affects Our Risk of Cancer
A healthy diet and lifestyle protect against a wide range of diseases, and new research presented at the AACR 2008 Annual Meeting, April 12-16, shows that cancer is no exception. Animal patients beam over laser success
Sam loves chasing squirrels in the backyard of his Urbandale home. But one squirrel got the best of him. He was on the tree-climbing, acorn-hording rodent's tail when it suddenly changed direction. Sam tried to quickly compensate and - snap - his anterior cruciate ligament, more commonly called the ACL, was torn. But thanks to advances in medicine being adopted by local veterinarians, Sam will be up and running after the bushy-tailed foe in no time. .
Stars join effort to protect skin from sun
At least two celebrities are shunning the sun for skin cancer awareness. Marcia Cross of "Desperate Housewives" is promoting the joint campaign between the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and beauty brand Olay for a free skin-cancer screening program, while Kristen Bell of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" has pledged to get her glow from a bottle. Bell signed on to the Glow in the Dark campaign on the Jergens.com Web site. For every similar pledge made by the public, Jergens -- known for its Natural Glow self-darkening skin products -- donates $1 to The Skin Care Foundation. "It's an oxymoron to say you've got a healthy tan," Bell, 27 says. "You want to glow." Even with the looks of a beach-loving starlet, Bell says she has pale Polish skin under her tinted moisturizer.
Skin Care Science Meets Art and Aesthetics
A six-year collaboration between several dermatologists, a gynecologist and a world-class cosmetic chemist has turned out to be more than a journey of scientific discovery. The development of Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion by 21st Century Formulations is a merger of art and science, creating a lotion that not only scientifically hydrates and protects healthy skin and restores the health of damaged skin, but also meets critical demands for a skin care product that aesthetically feels "just right." .

Supermarket staff were mystified when a cream for baby's bottom began selling like hot cakes. Then they discovered the reason - mums were putting it on their own faces. At 2.49 a pot, Waitrose's own-label Baby Bottom Butter is only a fraction of the cost of designer products. And its new-found fans claim it is the answer to their prayers. The buying frenzy began after it was given glowing endorsements on parenting websites. One contributor to mumsnet.com wrote: "I can't even remember what made me put it on my face one day but OMG - it is fab. "I have been using it constantly for 2 weeks now and my skin now has the smoothest texture, which I don't think it's had since prepubescence. "And it makes my foundation look super dewy and youthful too.
