Paul Harris was a young man just ending his time in the U.S. Air Force when he ended up embarking on a path he never imagined, but one that has been part of his life for decades whether he liked it or not. “They found my kidney problem on my discharge physical from the Air Force 49 years ago this year," said Harris, who lives in Wichita Falls. Dialysis has been a regular part of his life for more than 20 years, and he doesn't miss a session — never has. His health and life depend on it, and he's not taking any chances. Although the diagnosis came in the late 1950s, Harris, now 72, didn't have to go on dialysis until 1971. As he waited to go on dialysis in Dallas, he couldn't eat, and he got by for several days eating only bundles of peppermint sticks and peach halves.

If it is the ultimate compliment to suggest an improvising pianist is playing in a Keith Jarrett manner, then Kristjan Randalu can begin celebrating. "Live" is a recording that calls to mind Jarrett's solo performances, with one big difference: percussionist Bodek Janke. In these sessions recorded in Germany, the pair perform greatly inventive material that includes originals, standards and a version of the largo from Antonin Dvorak's "New World" symphony. The pianist hums and adds other vocal touches at times while playing jazz or in a 21st-century-classical manner. His 12-minute look at "Igauhel oma pill," which has a folk-sounding melody, is something from a new-music concert. He lays back into a nice groove on "All the Things You Are" and "If I Were a Bell," but perhaps the best moments come on the Dvorak piece.
Nash Wound Care Center adds chamber
Nash Wound Care Center added a third hyperbaric chamber to its facility on Thursday. The center, located behind Nash General Hospital on the campus of Nash Health Care, specializes in the treatment of nonhealing wounds, a significant and often debilitating condition that is becoming more prevalent due to America's aging population and the increase in the number of Americans with diabetes, said Dawn Wilson, communications coordinator for the hospital. Nonhealing wounds can cause serious health problems that may lead to amputation, said Mack Moore, the center's program director. "We started the Wound Care Center last year because we believed there was a need in our area to help those with problem wounds," Moore said. "Problem wounds are very common among those with diabetes and heart disease, as well as any condition that affects circulation." The additional hyperbaric chamber allows the center to treat more patients in their own community, Moore said.

Kids book explores mom's plastic surgery
Divorce. Bullies. Foster care. There are books for children on just about every tough subject these days. But mommy's plastic surgery? A Florida plastic surgeon has written about just that in “My Beautiful Mommy," a picture book due out April 28 that tries to calm the fears of kids with parents getting tummy tucks, breast enhancement procedures and nose jobs. Dr. Michael Salzhauer said so many moms brought kids to their appointments that he was motivated to stock up on lollipops in his Bal Harbour, Fla., office.
