Last week, our columnist DR Simeon Mesaki touched on misconceptions about albinos, leading to their being shunned and feared as products of witchcraft, taunted as `peeled potatoes`, `monkeys` and `ghosts`. This week, he touches on the consequences arising from this condition.
In many African societies albinos used to be killed or abandoned at birth and or even offered in ritual sacrifices.
Alex Munyere points out that among the Maasai a man would show his disapproval of his wife having an ``illegitimate`` child by placing the said baby at the entrance of the kraal so that the cows would spare it if it was his or trample and so kill it instantly if it was not his.
In the same vein if a Maasai woman gave birth to an albino child it was denied breast milk and exposed to harsh conditions.

DUSA Completes Enrollment For Phase IIb Trial Of Levulan(R) Photodynamic Therapy For Moderate To Severe Acne
DUSA Pharmaceuticals, Inc.(R) (NASDAQ GM:DUSA), is pleased to announce that the acne Phase IIb trial has achieved its goal of 260 participants, thus completing enrollment. The study's objective is to determine and compare the safety and efficacy of multiple broad area photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatments with Levulan® Kerastick® in combination with BLU-U® brand blue light versus use of the BLU-U alone in patients with moderate to severe facial acne vulgaris. This trial will evaluate the incremental advantage of adding Levulan to DUSA's already FDA-cleared BLU-U blue light therapy when treating acne.
"Completion of enrollment is an important milestone as DUSA looks to achieve a moderate to severe acne indication for Levulan PDT. Once the initial results are available, which we expect this fall, DUSA will decide on the next steps needed to develop this indication for potential FDA approval," said Bob Doman, President and CEO of DUSA.

Monthly self-examinations urged
Breast self-examination should be done after the end of a woman's menstrual period. Some experts recommend seven to 10 days afterwards; others recommend immediately afterwards.
The important thing is to do it after a woman's period ends, rather than before it starts, because hormones involved in menstruation can affect what a woman finds in her breast, said Blanchard Valley Hospital breast health nurse Debra Kuhlman.
Women no longer menstruating should simply perform the exam at the same time every month.

Lie down on your back with a pillow under your right shoulder.
Check your right breast with the pads of the three middle fingers on your left hand.
