The Other Affleck

Casey Affleck has been living in the shadow of his brother, Ben for the past 15 years. But now, his moment of glory has arrived. With two big back-to-back dramas; The Assassination of Jesse James and Gone Baby Gone, the laid-back low-profile actor is set to let the real drama begin. As 2008 looks to be a good and busy year for Affleck, FACES tracks down the new leading man and shows you that he really has it in him.

Born baby born

If you think the younger Affleck isn't as famous as his brother because he is less talented, think again. The American actor is also credited as writer, editor, producer, director, advisor and screenwriter in many films - stretching his capabilities beyond that of Ben's. Born Caleb Casey Affleck-Boldt on August 12, 1975 in Falmouth, Massachusetts, the second son of Timothy Affleck and Chris Ann Boldt grew up in quite an unstable home as a child.

Klapisch: Score one for Mets in rivalry

PHILADELPHIA - All spring - correction: all winter - the Mets had been bracing for this moment. All the initial ceremonies were out of the way now, including opening day, the first run-in with the Phillies at Shea, and the first miniature winning streak (even if it came at the expense of the talent-starved Nationals). The new and improved Mets? Time will tell. But April's résumé wouldn't be complete without the real test of the Mets' manhood: a trip to Citizens Bank Park, where the 2007 season started its descent into historical hell. None of the Mets' huffing and puffing about recovering from the crash would mean anything until they'd proven they could handle the Phils and the army of hard-cores in the stands. There was beauty written all over the Mets' 6-4 win on Friday, notably Johan Santana's four-hit, 10-strikeout performance that could've been one of his finest all-time performances.

Huntington School of Beauty Culture relocating to bigger site

HUNTINGTON -- Being cramped in a tight space is one thing. Being cramped in a room where you're giving perms is something completely different

That's one reason cosmetology student Amanda Creech is excited about the Huntington School of Beauty Culture relocating to a bigger site. Other reasons to be excited are new equipment and updated furnishings, said Catherine Belvin, owner of the beauty school.

"We talk about it every day -- getting out of here and getting a fresh, new everything," Belvin said.

The school is moving next month from its spot near the 29th Street exit of Interstate 64 to a spot about a mile down U.S. 60, in the Kmart Plaza. The move takes place at the end of May to make room for more medical offices as part of the new East Hills Professional Center.

AP IMPACT: Islamic schools lure African boys into begging

On the day he decided to run away, 9-year-old Coli awoke on a filthy mat. Like a pup, he lay curled against the cold, pressed between dozens of other children sleeping head-to-toe on the concrete floor. His T-shirt was damp with the dew that seeped through the thin walls. The older boys had yanked away the square of cloth he used to protect himself from the draft. He shivered. .

Inflammation triggers cell fusions that could protect neurons, Stanford research shows

STANFORD, Calif. - Chronic inflammation triggers bone marrow-derived blood cells to travel to the brain and fuse with a certain type of neuron up to 100 times more frequently than previously believed, according to a new study from the Stanford University School of Medicine.

After the fusion, the blood-cell nuclei begin to express previously silent, neuron-specific genes. The surprise finding in mice suggests that the creation of the fused cells, called heterokaryons, may possibly play a role in protecting neurons against damage and may open new doors to cell-mediated gene therapy.

"This finding was totally unprecedented and unexpected," said senior author Helen Blau, PhD, the Donald E. and Delia B. Baxter Professor and director of the Baxter Laboratory in Genetic Pharmacology.
