Microbial Resistance Towards Antibiotics: Still A Critical Issue
ECCMID Opening Press Conference. "The problem of antibiotic resistance continues to grow and this is mainly a consequence of longstanding misuse and abuse of antimicrobial agents", said Prof. Fernando Baquero, Congress President (Hospital Ramón y Cajal, Madrid). Among all the pathogens, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a frequent culprit in infections (mainly respiratory, urinary or skin infections) in hospital settings and nursing homes. Despite this, the general public is unfamiliar with this threat (F. Verhoeven et al. - ECCMID abstract no.1387) and unaware that MRSA can contaminate not only patients' rooms and healthcare workers, but also the environment outside hospitals, including houses or workplaces. "Bacterial resistance to antibiotics commonly used in children is already a critical problem because we cannot use all the antibiotics commonly available for use in adults for the treatment of children", pointed out Prof.
Elegant white wines of France
Dry White Bordeaux — The wines from this appellation, Dry White Bordeaux, are produced within an area of about 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres), on a soil perfectly suited to the vine. In the heart of this privileged province which has a diameter of about 100 kilometers, two thousand stimulated wine growers, proud of their surrounding countryside which is all softness, harmony, roundness and balance, have made a decisive choice. From what they admire every day they have created the AOC Dry White Bordeaux, naturally rich and typical and always much appreciated throughout the world. To the great delight of the AOC Dry White Bordeaux, as for all the Bordeaux wines, the grape varieties blend with one another but are not alike (even, if such and such a grape variety may be the dominant one). The Sauvignon produces very aromatic and scented wines; the Muscadelle gives typical wine full of finesse.
Volunteers to fix homes in Summit
Almost like magic, 15 homeowners' properties will be on the receiving end of some major, tender loving care when volunteers with Rebuilding Together Summit show up with power tools, paint and more. Those free blessings will rain down on selected homes across Summit County, courtesy of an application process, on Saturday, April 26. Rebuilding Together Summit County, in its 13th year, has as its noble goal keeping low-income elderly and disabled homeowners safe, warm and dry. Paul Holm, the local Rebuilding Together's executive director, is excited about the dramatic changes planned for the homes and the homeowners. Leo and Doris Mann of Akron, who were ripped off to the tune of $12,000 by a contractor charged with repairing their house after hail-storm damage, will be helped.

JOYNER SAYS PLEASE GIVE TAVIS SOME LOVE: Radio host writes open letter in response to Smiley's announced exit from morning show. "Well, you did it. This isn't the way you wanted it to happen, but it happened anyway. Just like I knew it would," begins an open letter from veteran radio personality Tom Joyner to Tavis Smiley. It's the latest in ongoing drama that followed Joyner's announcement Friday that Smiley will end his twice-a-week commentaries on the syndicated morning show. When the news broke, folks speculated that he couldn't handle the backlash he's been getting from blacks over his criticism of Barack Obama. Although Smiley released a statement saying he was leaving to focus on future projects under his company, The Smiley Group, Inc., Joyner isn't buying it.
Mistletoe As Cancer Treatment: Review Calls Evidence Weak
For many people, mistletoe conjures up images of Christmas holidays, but in parts of Europe, mistletoe extract is widely used as a therapy for cancer patients. However, a new review of studies finds only weak evidence that the treatment provides any benefit. Mistletoe proponents believe it strengthens the immune system while minimizing the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, thereby improving survival and increasing quality of life during treatment. In 2002, mistletoe extract was the most frequently prescribed therapy in German outpatient cancer clinics, outstripping tamoxifen. The compound is not approved for use in the United States to treat any medical condition, including cancer. While the plant contains several biologically active substances that could kill cancer cells, fight viruses and tune the immune system, how these substances work is still not clearly understood and there is much debate about whether they work at all in oncology therapy, according to Dr.
