Nepal on track in reducing infant mortality

Achham,Nepal Mathura Shahi, 30, presses the timer button and counts the breath intake of Sajjana, a month-old baby snuggling in her grandfather's arms. Shahi assures 79-year-old Setu Shahi that hes doing a fine job babysitting. Tell your daughter-in-law that she does not need to worry about the baby. Her breathing is normal, she says. But do remind her to see that the little one is to be breastfed on time. Gathering up the folds of the shawl around little Sajjana's face, she adds: And make sure that the baby is snuggled up properly and protected from the cold." On track to achieve MDG 4 Mathura is a Female Community Health Volunteer in Birpath village, Achham District, in far west Nepal. She is one of nearly 50,000 women in the country who have been working as the most reliable primary health care extension workers at the community level, trained to provide key services and interventions for pregnant women and children.

A reduction in care

A mother sits in the waiting room of the local community clinic, desperate for a doctor to examine her newborn's jaundiced skin. Next to her sits a construction worker with diabetes, and next to him, an aging woman desperate for a more effective pain cocktail to mask her rheumatoid arthritis.

VISTA: Case of TB discovered at Vista High School

VISTA -- County health workers are offering tuberculosis skin tests to some Vista High School students after one of their classmates was diagnosed with the disease, officials said Monday.School officials identified roughly 120 students and employees who could have been exposed to the disease last month and have sent letters home, offering them free skin tests at the campus. The school has worked to make sure that parents are aware of the situation and has made automated phone calls to the homes of all students, Principal Larry White said.White stressed that so far the case is an isolated one and said it's completely safe for students to attend school."Student safety is our number one concern at Vista High," he said. "We're definitely exercising precaution."Though it's rare for tuberculosis to pop up at schools, it does happen from time to time, including a case last year at Felicita Elementary School in Escondido. In 2007, there were 280 cases of the disease reported throughout San Diego County.Symptoms of tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss.

San Bernardino County Briefs - 4/6/08

Concerned that the foreclosure crisis could contribute to abandoned homes and blighted communities, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors next week will consider a proposal next week to study the issue.

Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt, who wrote the proposal with fellow Supervisor Dennis Hansberger, said in a news release Friday that vacant homes are a public safety risk and attract crime and vandalism. The theft of metal from abandoned homes has become a particular concern, he said.

The Board of Supervisors will consider the proposal Tuesday during its weekly meeting at the County Government Center, 385 N. Arrowhead Ave. in San Bernardino. If the recommendation is approved, county staffers will investigate and report their findings May 13.

Deciphering polygamy chic

For a society accustomed to the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, the images of the women from the polygamist compound in Texas are almost shocking in their understatement: Ankle-length dresses, makeup-free faces, hauntingly uniform hair.

And while no one would accuse the women of making a fashion statement, the pioneer-style outfits are a rare example of how in an age of overexposure, modesty, too, can give pause.

The puff-sleeved, pastel dresses worn by the women in the sect are a combination of 19th-century wear and 1950s clothing that was adopted when the church took a conservative turn, according to Janet Bennion, an anthropologist who studies polygamist women.

The dresses are meant to show modesty and conformity: They cover to the ankles and wrists and are often worn over other garments or pants, making sure every possibly provocative inch of skin is covered.

Passover traditions in Jewish households include Seder meal

For Passover novices, an invitation to a Seder can be exciting, and a bit intimidating.

The most widely celebrated Jewish festival, Passover (which begins at sundown Saturday, April 19), also known by its Hebrew name Pesach, commemorates the ancient Israelites' liberation from Egyptian slavery.

Passover lasts eight days and begins with two nights of Seders. Traditions vary greatly depending on a family's background.

Most Jews eschew "the five species of grains" - wheat, rye, oats, barley and spelt, all of which contain gluten.

The exception is matzo, which is made from wheat, but has not been allowed to ferment. Matzo must be baked within 18 minutes of the flour being combined with water.

Fruit is always a safe bet for a Passover meal, as are potatoes and other root vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, eggs, fish, dairy and meat (although, in accordance with kosher laws, meat and dairy must be served separately).
