Young-Williams Animal Center looks to public for help

When Cotton and Lily met, they made an instant connection.

Once the requisite circling and sniffing ended, the two dogs began wrestling with each other like longtime buddies.

Lily's owner, Lisa Burchette, said she decided to adopt Cotton because she couldn't separate the two "soul mates."

Burchette had brought her dog to Young-Williams Animal Center, 3201 Division St., because Lily needed a companion. Burchette said she chose to get the dog from the shelter because too many animals are euthanized for her to go buy one from a pet store.

"I just hate to see that happen," she said.

The managers at Young-Williams also hate it. The shelter is euthanizing more dogs and cats and taking in more unwanted animals than at any time since it opened in 2001.

In fact, the numbers in both columns - euthanasias and intakes - have been climbing steadily, consistently, every year through 2007.

Greener cleaners can be a step in the right direction

Customers can bring in a toxic cleaner to Whole Foods from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on April 22 and trade it for a free enzyme-based cleaner to replace it.

Enzyme cleaners work by utilizing natural proteins that eat whatever it is you're looking to clean. Sounds great, right? Well, the Green Guide says it is ... sort of. Some powdered enzymes can also cause asthma, notes Senior Editor Emily Main. There are other ingredients in the enzyme-based cleaners that aren't so good, either.

"Because ready-to-use enzyme cleaners are diluted with water, they require the use of preservatives," Main notes, "and many companies use harsh chemicals like propylene glycol, a skin and eye irritant, and other neurotoxic glycol ethers such as butyl cellosolve."

But, she says, if you buy concentrated versions, which have less water, you can avoid some of those preservatives.

Hair care dos and don'ts

When junior Charlotte Miller decided to bleach her naturally brown hair, she thought she would be saving herself time and money by doing it herself at home. What was left after the process was an orangey, ratty nest with missing patches of hair.

"It was the worst experience ever," Miller said. "I freaked out and called my mom who, ironically, is a hair stylist."

Her mother, who lives out-of-state, advised her to go to a professional, and after three sessions she was able to undo most of the damage, Miller said.

"I should have known better since my hair is very fine," Miller said. "And taking the easy way out ended costing me more in the end."

Hair bleaching mishaps are not always from trying to do hair at home.

Senior Cindy Salazar is still suffering from the effects of a hairstyle gone wrong.
