| Smelling as sweet as a newborn baby
Now at the grown-up fragrance counter - the scent of a baby. Several perfumers are creating fragrances that try to capture what Americans think of as new baby smell, that aroma of baby powder and lotion that conjures up memories of happy, peaceful newborn bliss. That sweet, immediately recognizable scent can have elements of violet, cumarine and musk, says Delphine Jelk, of the fragrance lab and manufacturer Drom, and "when you smell it, you smell baby skin." It wasn't an accident that Guerlain's L'Instant Magic has a hint of that powder smell. It's "built around white musk, and these notes are very powdery and soft. I am especially fond of these notes because they remind me of my children's' scent and soft skin when they were babies," says Sylvaine Delacourte, Guerlain creative director of fragrances.

Go green at home and protect the family from harmful chemicals
Mollie Walz, Lexi Ward and Nicole Brubaker are dedicated to making their homes healthy, one sippy cup at a time. Their desire to become greener was sparked by an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" that discussed eco-friendly household cleaners. "I was shocked," said Walz, a Palm Desert stay-at-home mom. "I've done all the right things for my kids, and then I find out I've been slathering these chemicals on their bodies." Walz was particularly dismayed when she discovered her favorite brand of baby bottle uses a type of plastic that can leach toxic chemicals. Through e-mails, phone calls and play dates, the women have been gathering information, sharing it, and finally detoxing their homes. "You start thinking about everything you put in your body and everything you use in your house ..." Walz said.

Woman stays active despite Parkinson's
A Crest Hill resident says she's not going to let a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease get in her way of enjoying life. Evonne Cook, 76, said it's like something a young man at her church shared with her about life's difficulties: It's not about weathering the storm, it's about dancing in the rain. Cook said she noticed her first symptom almost four years ago when her right hand suddenly, as if with a mind of its own, did a flip-flop. That was interesting, she said. Then she was driving to Chicago with a couple of friends when her whole right leg did a kind of flop as she was driving. That's when it went from interesting to scary. But even scarier was a misdiagnosis she received from a specialist about her involuntary muscle movements. He told her she had multisystem atrophy (MSA), which is a group of rare degenerative diseases that cause its sufferers to go downhill pretty quickly.
